Baptism is a symbolic act showing what has already happened to a person when they became a Christian.

By going into the water, they show that just as Jesus died for their sin, they too have died to their old way of life without God.

By going under the water, they show that just as Jesus was buried, they too have buried their old way of life without God.

By coming out of the water, they show that just as Jesus came back to life from the dead, they too have received a new life in Him.

When people are baptised, they are also showing that they belong to a new community of Christians, known as the Church.

This is a picture of Katie when she was baptised. Many people give a testimony before a baptism, which is when someone talks about how they became a Christian. This is Katie's testimony.

'I became a Christian when I was 5. I didn't really understand a lot, but wanted to know more about God. I talked about it a lot at home, and began to know more. I learned something really important, "Jesus loves me." One night when my Mum and Dad were putting me to bed, I prayed and asked God for forgiveness and asked to be His special child. After that I learnt much more about Him. Now I take communion. I also pray at school and at home; I tell God I'm sorry, and ask for His forgiveness, love and help. I think baptism is a special step to take because I love God, and want everyone to know I put my trust in Him.'
