Mark, the youth leader at the citadel

My name is Mark, and I am training to be the corps youth secretary. This means I will organise the events for the young people in the citadel. I run the 13+ group, and help with the music for the worship band.

I am training for two years with the Oasis Youth Ministry course. We have two days a week in London learning about the Bible, and how to work with young people. The other three days a week I am a trainee youth worker at the citadel here.

God told me to start training as a youth worker last year. I was listening to some CDs playing, and God spoke to me through the words of the music. For example, while listening to the song 'Be Thou My Vision', I was worried if I had enough money to stop working and to train to be a youth worker. Then I heard the words from the song 'Riches I need not'. I knew that it was God telling me not to worry about money.

The youth work is important in the citadel because young people want to know more about God, but want to do things differently, and find out about different things from adults. Young people need different help and support with their Christian lives. Seeing young people grow in their Christian faith has helped my faith grow stronger, and has challenged me to find out more about being a Christian.
