The altar stands at the front of the church. You can also see the rails where people kneel for communion.
In Combs church, the main altar is the focal point for worshippers. There is also a small altar in the side chapel.
The altar is covered with a different coloured cloth according to the season.
 
  In ancient times in many religious traditions, an altar was a place of 'sacrifice'; people sacrificed or offered other animals, other humans or food on an altar to placate (please) their gods. In church, bread and wine are placed on the altar at the Communion service; Jesus told his followers to remember his death using these two elements. Christians believe Jesus' death was a 'sacrifice' for their sins.
