| In ancient times in many religious traditions, an altar was a place of 'sacrifice'; people sacrificed or offered other animals, other humans or food on an altar to placate (please) their gods. In church, bread and wine are placed on the altar at the Communion service; Jesus told his followers to remember his death using these two elements. Christians believe Jesus' death was a 'sacrifice' for their sins. |
